People across Wales are invited to share views on a new renewable energy company proposed by the Welsh government. This company would develop and own wind and solar plants while supporting local communities in taking ownership stakes. The goal is to reduce energy costs over time, though it won’t directly set household electricity prices.
The plans aim to integrate existing Welsh energy schemes like Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru (TGC) and Ynni Cymru to expand locally owned renewables. The government seeks public input on how the new entity should operate, including whether it should be based on TGC or use the name Ynni Cymru. The proposal also explores taking stakes in larger offshore wind, marine energy, and nuclear projects.
Additionally, a Welsh Energy Wealth Fund is proposed to support vulnerable communities and areas where projects are being developed. Minister Adam Price emphasized the vision of a clean, cheap, and locally owned energy system, highlighting Wales’ historical energy potential and avoiding past mistakes where benefits didn’t benefit locals. The consultation seeks to merge existing schemes into a unified company with expertise to drive meaningful change.
Projects like wind farms at Carreg Wen (Aberdare) and Glyn Cothi (Carmarthenshire) are being considered under TGC’s current initiatives.
